First Weekend was a gateway to a new century. Beginning with New Year celebrations in Birmingham, UK, the weekend continued in 'Revolution', two days of free participatory arts activities in Birmingham's International Convention Centre. Artists and arts organisations worked with the public to create installations, films, sculptures, music, automata, digital art and video pieces all based on the themes of circles and cycles.
During the two days of 'Revolution', Ranbir Kaur and Heather Steele collaborated to construct a 9 metre Rangoli as the centre piece of the venue. Ranbir worked with lentils, rice, desiccated coconut, sawdust, while Heather worked with wheat, maize, fruit and both animal and human foodstuffs gathered on her farm. In the build up to the New Year Ranbir and Heather led workshops with local groups. Symbols and motifs created during these sessions were incorporated into the final Rangoli design.
